Months pass, and weeks before the case is due to be filed, a discovery by a DNA marker helps investigators track down Massimo Giuseppe Bossetti, who turns out to be a 100% match. The trial lasts a year, after which he is sentenced to life in prison. Yara’s parents look relieved at Letizia and the film ends with captions describing how Bossetti has repeatedly appealed the verdict, without success.

That’s why at the end of Yara all fingers point to Bossetti as the one who attacked Wound, resulting in her death. It seems that there are many signs pointing to man’s guilt. However, the most damning evidence against him is that which links him to the DNA sample found on… Yara’s clothes. The unidentified person with the same DNA as found on Yara’s clothing is codenamed “Unknown 1”. Since this term becomes synonymous with the criminal responsible for the girl’s death, when Bossetti turns out to be ‘Unknown 1’, it essentially confirms that he is the killer.

The film retains a dark and almost distant tone, which effectively underscores the heartbreaking events depicted. Perhaps one of the most frustrating and heartbreaking aspects of the case is the long intervals between discoveries. When things start to look hopeless and public pressure and skepticism mounts. In the movie, Wound is attacked in November 2010, and it takes three months to find her body.

The DNA search for “Unknown 1” then takes over a year, and the subsequent trial also takes about a year. Bossetti was eventually found guilty and sentenced to life in prison in July 2015, bringing the duration of the investigation to four years and seven months.
