Mohammad Umer (19 April 1955 – 2 October 2021), known professionally as Umar Sharif, was a Pakistani actor, comedian, director, producer, and television personality. He was regarded as one of the greatest comedians in the sub-continent.

Famous Pakistani comedian Umar Sharif passes away in Germany

Umar Sharif, the legendary Pakistani comedian, had been fighting for his life in Germany for the past few days, and he died today, much to everyone’s dismay.

As per a report by Dawn.com, On September 28, Sharif took an air ambulance to a hospital in the United States for treatment. On the journey, however, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to a hospital during a layover in Germany.

After making a video request to Prime Minister Imran Khan for assistance in obtaining a visa to fly overseas for medical treatment, the veteran actor’s ailing condition became a source of national worry.

The federal government promised to assist him, and the Sindh government stepped in as well, allocating Rs40 million for his treatment.

Kapil Sharma also tweeted about his death and conveyed his condolences.

Ali Zafar, the actor who has given Bollywood a few great movies also tweeted about his demise.

Umar Sharif (April 19, 1955, age 65 years) is a Pakistani comedian and actor, director, producer, writer, composer, author, poet, and television personality.

Sharif was born in Liaquatabad, Karachi as Mohammad Umer. He started his showbiz career in Karachi as a stage performer at the age of 14. Much of the success comes from the fact that he started to record his stage shows rented out in a similar to movies.

Stage work

In 1974, Umer started his career in Karachi as a stage performer at the age of 14. He joined theatre, using the stage name Umer Zarif but later renamed that to Umer Sharif. Some of his extremely popular comedy stage plays were 1989’s Bakra Qistoon Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Ha.

Sharif became a very popular star during this period. Much of the success came from the fact that he started to record his stage shows and his videotapes were rented out in a similar manner to movies. Yes Sir Eid and No Sir Eid were among the first stage plays to come out on video.

In October 2009, Sharif started hosting his own late-night talk show, The Shareef Show, on Geo TV. He interviewed many actors, entertainers, musicians, and politicians on the show. He also appeared as a guest judge on the Indian stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, alongside Navjot Singh Siddhu and Shekhar Suman.

On 10 September 2021, Pakistani television host and news anchor Waseem Badami posted a video of Umar Shareef on Instagram where he requested the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan for cancer treatment facilitation overseas.

Soon after the video came out, Indian singer Daler Mehndi also appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan for immediate treatment of comedian Umer Sharif. On 11 September 2021, the government formed a medical board to decide whether or not to send him abroad for treatment. 

He was granted a US visa for medical treatment on 16 September 2021 and the Sindh government also approved 40 million rupees for the treatment of Umar Sharif. On 2 October 2021, he passed away in a hospital in Nuremberg, Germany.
