Theal Movie Story
The story takes place in the Koyambedu market in Chennai. Cash lending is an essential part of this dynamic commercial hub, making predatory lenders seem like a major threat. Here, Dorai (Prabhudheva) acts as a ferocious, murderous colleague of one such predatory moneylender named Paulraj (Shatru).
Everything is fine for Dorai until a lady (Easwari Rai) storms into his house and claims she is his mother. This sends Dorai’s existence into a twist, and what happened next makes up the rest of the story.
A few moments in Theal it feels like a strange movie from now on. The biggest shock is that the main character Dorai is not a saint, but rather a blunder. The moment we first see him, he casually jumps into places of people who owe money and nearly beats them to death.
In such a case, a debtor’s husband insures her better half room, removes her sari, and pleads Dorai to “take her” and let her significant other be. You can imagine the ways this scene would have worked in a typical star vehicle.
Here Dorai evens out more disturbed by this activity and starts hitting her with a rescheduled schedule. Dorai enjoys such vague erraticisms throughout the film, at the same time we also get to see his day-to-day existence on a higher level to get a sense of what his identity is.
Living in a small, chaotic loft at the bottom of the city, Dorai’s reality seems barren, lost, but buried. Dorai does not cooperate with anyone, neither his supervisor nor his victims, and he lets activities lead the discussion. During the day he works and at night he watches an untamed life show, drinks and rests.

Oddly enough, the occasions on that natural life reflect the day he had recently. For example, after being attacked by a band of villains, we see many bison tearing a panther apart. One strange evening, he lays down with a bar performer named Thilaka (Samyuktha Hegde) and pays her in cash a short time later.

The catch? Thilaka does not do it for money, but is charmed by him. This again establishes what Dorai considers himself: as someone who accepts that he is repulsive or that he does not deserve to be worshipped. What actually happens through this multitude of scenes is that we buy who the person is without even having a history of why he is that way.

Dorai’s characterization, the nominal Scorpion reference, the inverted humanoid attribution, and the situation in reality make you think about whether Harikumar was powerfully propelled by Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film Drive.
