The power of the dog: Did Benedict Cumberbatch Jump the Shark With His New Movie? –

The trailer for the new Benedict Cumberbatch movie has been released and it looks like it will somehow work weird (we’ll explain, promise). While this may seem like a strange direction for Benedict Cumberbatch, this new movie looks interesting to say the least.

The new Benedict Cumberbatch movie, called The power of the dog is expected to hit theaters on November 17 and hit Netflix on December 1, and will be one of the first to kick off this new hybrid release trend. This gives fans (and we) plenty of time to find out exactly what’s going on in this movie and whether it’s really any good.

Twitter, of course, already has a few comments about the new Benedict Cumberbatch movie. We rode through the threads for more information and the best reactions to the new Benedict Cumberbatch movie. Grab your cowboy boots as we dive into the movie The power of the dog.

The power of the dog

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother takes home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. The film is based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name and it seems that the film is very loyal to the plot.

Cumberbatch stars as Phil Burbank, with Jesse Plemons as George, Phil’s brother. Other stars include Kirsten Dunst who plays widow Rose Gordon who married George after moving her son, Peter, to the ranch. The role of Peter is Kodi Smit-McPhee. The film also stars Thomas McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Adam Beach, Peter Carroll and more.

While the film is already getting some buzz-season buzz, we can’t help but wonder how this will go, given the odd combination of actor and genre. On closer examination, this may not be as strange as people think.

Outside the comfort zone

Obviously, many of us probably wouldn’t have thought that British actor Benedict Cumberbatch would choose to star in a Western, especially one with such a monstrous lead. Since his most popular characters are intellectuals of some capacity (Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Steven Strange), it’s weird to see him as such a rough and tumble archetype.

However, Cumberbatch is also a talented actor who has stepped out of his comfort zone before. His titular performance as Patrick Melrose, a man full of inner demons and some ill-mannered manners, is a prime example of his ability to take on roles some might not have thought of.

Therefore, while this may seem odd, the buzz and trailer seem to make it clear that this movie could really work for Cumberbatch. As of now, social media certainly thinks so.

THE POWER OF THE DOG is a work of art. Jane Campion meticulously crafts a slow-burning character exploration that is as captivating as it is challenging. Benedict Cumberbatch is Commander, Kirsten Dunst is heartbreaking and Kodi Smit-McPhee is unforgettable. What a movie. #SydFilmFest
