The cinematic universe of the Netflix Christmas movie? Inside the new deets
Christmas just got competitive and very interesting. If Hallmark bears the seal of approval for the OG Christmas movies – pun intended – then Netflix won’t go under without trying to draw at least some of its audience away.
Welcome to Netflix’s Holiday Movie Universe, an interconnected world of eight movies (and more to come) where anyone can become a princess and have your soulmate hide in plain sight — or in the past!

Hallmark Channel and its sister network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries have been stealing the show for their Christmas aesthetic for years, but this year their 40 TV movies will be pitted against the Lifetime channel’s 34 new releases. Now they have a marketing gimmick for holiday movies to compete against and it’s been called the Netflix holiday movie universe.
Told in a very fairytale way, Netflix has shared the details about this festive counterpart to the superhero universes. “It all started when producers had to show a movie in 2018 The holiday calendar‘, they tweeted from their official Twitter handle.Inside the new deets
Netflix Christmas Movies Cinematic Universe: Did We Hear That Right?
Yes you did. MPCA, the production company behind several Christmas movies such as Christmas legacy, The holiday calendar, The princess switch, Vacation in the wild, and The Knight for Christmas can be credited for this.
Amanda Phillips Atkins, EVP at MPCA, said: “It felt like a natural fit to show one of our other films available on Netflix. That one seed of an idea quickly turned into a fun opportunity to explore the different worlds. tie together with little Easter eggs from film to film.” Who doesn’t love Easter eggs?Ask a Taylor Swift fan!
Then Netflix executives were tasked with keeping an eye on movies that could be linked together. The first batch of films to be “inextricably linked” were: The Knight for Christmas, The princess switch, and The Christmas Prince. It’s still early, of course, so Netflix had to explain the connections.
In The Knight for Christmas Emmanuelle Chriqui’s character mentions that their family once visited Aldovia while holding the iconic acorn. Thereafter, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby reveals that Aldovia and Belgravia are actually near each other on a map. From that point on, Atkins explains, the opportunity to tie the entire cohort of Christmas movies into a universe of its own was too tempting to let go.
She explains: “We planned to go beyond just having our characters watch each other on TV. We thought it would be a great opportunity to build out an entire universe, not just for Aldovia but for the whole world of our Christmas movies!”
So here’s what you need to know: The Netflix Christmas Movie Universe is currently offering A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, The holiday calendar, The Knight for Christmas, Christmas legacy, The princess switch, and Vacation in the wild.
The genre of holiday movies: Blooming & how
Hannah Pillemer, the executive vice president of development and production for MarVista Entertainment, reportedly said that when she joined the Westwood company eight years ago, vacation movies made up about 10% of the development agenda. She called the genre ‘the movie ghetto’ at the time. Now the genre covers 50% of the production company’s projects. She mentions that the appetite for such films has grown exponentially.
What is it about Christmas movies or holiday movies that we love so much when the holidays are clearly not fun for everyone? Michelle Vicary, Hallmark’s Executive Vice President of Programming may have an answer.
She was quoted as saying, “When people come to see a Hallmark Christmas movie, they come for an experience… [of] positivity, of optimism, of a promise that after spending two hours with us, you will feel a little better about yourself and about the world and about your community and your family and friends.” There’s something about watching hygge on the screen that elevates the holiday mood.
