Meadows 2-out, 2-run Single In 9th, Rays Beat Orioles 5-4

S.D. Petersburg, Fla .: Austin Meadows hit two outs, two runs in the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Wednesday.

Randy Arosarena scored two home runs and had a key single as he won the race for the 10th time in 13 games. He put an end to the 21-game home run drought that beat Baltimore 9-3 on Tuesday nights.

Tampa Bay went behind when Francisco Meja led the ninth game with a single run against Danner Scott (3-4) and pinch-hitter Mike Junino.

Arosarena then made an expansion to the right, with first paceman Ryan Mountcase and second paceman Pat Valaika colliding.

After Vidal Bruze was out, Meadows lined up 0-2 on the pitch.

Colin McHugh (3-1) served in two unbeaten innings.

Alexander Wells allowed three runs and five wins over 5 2/3 innings as he filled in for Baltimore starter Keegan Akin on the COVID-19 injury list.

Wells made his first career start and third appearance overall, scoring seven runs and walking two off 93 pitches. The left-hander became the 13th Australian-born player to make a big league start in third place with the Orioles.

In addition to Akin, offfielder Anthony Santander is also in the Kovil-19 IL.

Mounted hit a solo homer in fourth place. He stopped Baltimore 4-3 in the sixth inning RBI single with Matt Whistler.

Valaika had a solo home run, which was the second of his year and was built from May 5 to No. 2 in the third.

Baltimore’s Austin Hayes had a first-inning RBI double before Arosarena merged with a Leadoff Homer at the bottom of the inning.

Rays: Manuel Margot (left femoral strain) will start rehab work from the starting lineup for the second straight game with Junino (left hip flexion) Triple-A Durham over the next two days. RHP JP Feyereisen (right shoulder ascariasis) went to IL for 10 days and RHP Chris Massa was recalled from Triple-A Durham.
