She was featured in actress Radhika starring in the Arasi serial, which premiered between 2007 to 2009. She rose to fame for her role of Poongodi in the Sun TV serial Vaani Raani. She started her career as a VJ in Sun Music.
It is alleged that the affair between Mahalakshmi and Ishwar Raghunathan began during the shooting of the Devathaiyai Kanden serial. Ishwar is the second husband of actress Jayashree Rao.
