Little Over 40 Indian Athletes to Participate in Olympics Opening Ceremony Amid COVID Fears

More than 44 Indian athletes will not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday in view of the Kovit-19 threat. Athletes marching the next day have already been told to skip the event. With six officers, the parade will add up to a total of 50 Indian reserves in the past. “We don’t want to create an environment where our athletes are susceptible to infection. Therefore, it has been decided to reduce the number of athletes and officials participating in the opening ceremony to less than 50, “Rajiv Mehta, General Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association, told PTI.

More than 125 athletes represent India in the Games, including 228 including officers, coaches and other support staff substitutes considering Kovit-19. Six officials (from each country) are allowed at the ceremony, but no caps for athletes. However, we have advised athletes with events the next day to focus on their sport rather than the festival, ”Deputy Chief of Mission Prem Kumar Verma said on Wednesday.

10m air pistol shooters like Surab Chaudhary, Abhishek Verma, Apurvi Sandela and Eleven Valarivan, who had events on the first day of the competition, were left out of the festival while Manu Bakar, Yashashwini Singh Deswal, Deepak Kumar and Divyansh Singh Banwar were on the second day. In addition to six coaches and a physiotherapist in Tokyo, the Indian team has eight guns, five pistols and two skeet shooters.

The day after the opening ceremony, boxers, archers and men’s and women’s hockey teams will compete. India has selected men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh and six – time world champion female boxer MC Mary Kom as the flag bearers for the opening ceremony.

With Mary Kom not scheduled to compete the next day, Manpreet will lead the team to their first Pool A match against New Zealand on Saturday. Verma spoke about the athletes and officials who recently landed in Japan. In other countries, more than 30 athletes in the UK will not be taking part in the festival due to the Govt-19. There are 376 athletes on the field in sports.
