Jamie Bell, who played Ben Grimm/the Thing in 2015’s infamous Fantastic Fourtalked about Marvel Studios’ upcoming reboot and whether he would ever return to the role.
Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank, was generally regarded as one of the worst superhero movies of all time. It starred Jamie Bell as the Thing, alongside Miles Teller’s Mr. Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan’s Human Torch and Kate Mara’s Invisible Woman. The movie rebooted the Fantastic Four franchise, owned by 21st Century Fox at the time, following 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer† Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the property is now due to be rebooted again as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Jamie Bell appears to be all too aware of Fantastic Four‘s poor reception. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, he was asked about the upcoming reboot and the possibility of returning as the Thing. It seems unlikely Marvel would reuse actors from a previous franchise – regardless of opinions on the previous film – in a reboot under the MCU banner. The introduction of Spider-Man to the MCU, for instance, saw Tom Holland cast as the character previously played by Andrew Garfield. However, even with the doors to the multiverse opening, allowing for returns from previous Spider-Men (in Spider Man: No Way Home) and X-Men (in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness)Bell does not believe there would be any call for him to return as the Thing.
“I don’t think anyone wants to see that, to be honest,” the actor said when asked about reprising the role of the Thing. However, he remains positive about Marvel’s reboot and shared his excitement for the new take on the Fantastic Four. “I’m excited for it,” he said of the upcoming movie, being directed by Spider Man: No Way Home‘s Jon Watts. “I can’t wait to see that, for that to come to life. I can’t wait to see that movie done, fully realized in that Kevin Feige way, it’s going to be fantastic.”
