Granville Adams (October 8, 1963 – October 10, 2021) was an American actor best known for his role as Zahir Arif on the HBO television series Oz. He also had a recurring role on the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street as Officer Jeff Westby.

Granville Adams, star of the HBO TV series Oz, has passed away at the age of 58. Adams portrayed Zahir Arif on HBO’s prison drama, which ran for six seasons from July 1997 to February 2003. After first featuring as a guest role, Adams was soon promoted to a recurring character on Oz.
Arif, Adams’ character, who appeared in 48 total episodes of the series, was incarcerated at Oswald State Correctional Facility for possession of stolen goods. However, during the show, Arif becomes a different man, reforming himself with the help of Islam and becoming one of the more tranquil prisoners in the series.
In addition to his most well-known role as Arif, Adams starred as Officer Jeff Westby on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street from 1996 to 1999. He also appeared as Detective Jones in 2002’s Empire and played Scout in the 2011 film Magic City Memoirs. Before his passing, the actor had been battling cancer, and last shared an update on his health from his hospital bed on Instagram in July of this year.
In confirmation of Adams’ passing, Oz showrunner and executive producer, Tom Fontana, paid tribute to Adams in an Instagram post. Fontana shared a photo of Adams as Arif from the series and captioned the post, “Goodnight, sweet prince/and flights of angels sing thee to they rest.” Fellow Oz star, Dean Winters, also shared his own Instagram post, which called the actor a “humble, beautiful soul,” as well as Winters saying that he’s “a better human being” for knowing Adams. How did Granville Adams die?
The cause of Granville Adams’s death was revealed to be his long battle with cancer. He had publicly announced that he was diagnosed with cancer on 5 December 2020.
After this, Granville uploaded a number of pictures of himself in the hospital bed and explaining his health status.

Finally, after several months of struggle, he finally passed away on 10 October 2021. He was aged 58 at the time of his death.
Granville Adams’ Oz co-star Dean Winters took to Instagram to offer his condolences. He wrote,
“ I first met Granny in 1992 and I immediately drank the Kool Aid. His smile was infectious, his chuckle was intoxicating. He never, ever spoke ill of anyone and I defy anyone who knew him to say anything negative about this man. “

On February 4, 2007, Adams was arrested and charged with criminally negligent manslaughter for the death of a man in a nightclub. According to police reports, Adams had an altercation with Orlando Valle at BED New York, a Manhattan nightclub of which Adams was the manager.
He was accused of shoving Valle against the elevator doors of the sixth-floor club, causing the doors to come unhinged and Valle to fall down the shaft to his death. According to Adams’ attorneys, Adams was trying to break up an altercation between a client and an employee when Valle attacked Adams from behind and Adams acted in self-defense by throwing Valle from behind.
Adams was released on a $ 5,000 bond and faced up to four years in prison. Since then, BED New York has closed due to the incident. On June 30, 2007, a judge dropped the charges against Adams. Valle’s family filed a civil lawsuit against Adams.

Later, in 2000, he also portrayed Officer Westby in the TV movie of the Homicide franchise, titled “Homicide: The Movie.”
