Andrew Yang, a New York businessman who ran unsuccessfully for president and mayor of New York, announced Monday that he is leaving the Democratic Party and has changed his voter registration to “independent.”

“It was a strangely emotional experience,” Yang said in post on his website. Yang registered as a Democrat in 1995 and says he remained a “staunch Democrat” throughout his 20s and has since made many friends and confidantes in the party.

“I’m confident that no longer being a Democrat is the right thing,” said Yang, who dropped out of the race for New York City mayor this year after being an early front-runner.

Prior to the mayoral race, Yang launched his bid for the presidency in late 2017. A lawyer turned entrepreneur and author of a book called “The War on Normal People,” Yang appealed to voters by warning of the ills of technology — including automation and artificial intelligence.

Andrew Yang Biography, Wiki

After graduating from the elite Phillips Exeter Academy in 1992, Yang went to Brown University (1992-1996), studying political science and economics, and later attended law school at Columbia University (1996-1999).

His nonprofit, Humanity Forward, advances and implements the ideas that he championed during his presidential campaign: a universal basic income, data as a property right, a “humanity first” approach to capitalism and more.

In his bestselling book, “The War on Normal People”, he explains the mounting crisis of the automation of labor and makes the case for the Freedom Dividend, a Universal Basic Income of $1,000 a month for every American, along with hundreds of other policies to put humanity first.

His upcoming book, Forward: Notes on Our Democracy, will be published by Crown on October 5th, detailing the structural problems with America’s democracy, including ever-increasing polarization, and how to address them.

In 2020, Andrew became a top contender for the Presidency and was later called a “sensation” by The Washington Post. According to CNN, Andrew’s campaign “didn’t just make history… it unquestionably put a sizable dent in the future.”

Andrew Yang Career

On the campaign trail, Yang often described his brief lawyering days in jest (he was a corporate lawyer for only five months.) Rather than be stuck in a career he had little interest in, Yang dove into his real passion: entrepreneurship.

After launching a variety of startups in the early 2000s, Yang eventually became CEO of Manhattan Prep, a test prep company, and later founded the successful nonprofit Ventures for America (VFA) in 2011, which prompted the Obama Administration to name him a “Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship” in 2015. Two years later, Yang stepped down as the CEO of VFA.

In February 2000, Yang joined his office mate, Jonathan Philips, in launching Stargiving, a website for celebrity-affiliated philanthropic fundraising. The startup had some initial success but folded in 2002 as the dot-com bubble burst. Yang became involved in other ventures, including a party-organizing business. From 2002 to 2005, he served as the vice president of a healthcare startup.
