10 best crime thrillers on Netflix you must watch this weekend

Ah, the deliciousness of a truly great thriller. It is about as comforting to tuck into these best crime thrillers on Netflix and others with oodles of sabotage, stabbing and intrigue as it is to pull apart a slice of unapologetically cheesy pizza–and we will never turn down a slice. There’s really no dearth of thriller series to be chosen from, but how do you tell the grain from the chaff, the delectable bingeables from the crushing disappointments. You leave it to us, that’s how. We’ve sieved out the try-hard forgettables and left only with the ones that deserve to be added to Your List. Consider your weekend planned with these 10 best crime thrillers on Netflix.

10 best crime thrillers on Netflix that you must watch this weekend

1. Dark Desire

If you like your thrillers with layers of infidelity, this Mexican thriller drama is just the ticket. Alma spends a wild weekend at her best friend Brenda’s house and spends the night with a mysterious stranger; which puts her marriage–and her life–in jeopardy. Especially when, the morning after she returns, Brenda is found dead in her home. It’s the perfect time to tuck into it–season two just started streaming.

2. One Of Us Is Lying

Think of this one as Gossip Girl meets Pretty Little Liars† with one carefully planned murder thrown in. Five high schoolers are in detention together, Breakfast Club style, when the most hated person in the room–Simon, who runs a tell-all gossip portal called About That–drops dead after a seemingly innocent cup of water. Any way you slice it, the murderer was in the room. So, then, one of them is lying…

3. The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

Its long, winding name is that starter to this satire thriller series with the ever-effervescent Kristen Bell, who plays the heavily medicated and alcoholic Anna, a woman riddled with tragedy trying to find her feet. One of the few things she still likes doing is spying on her neighbors from the window; until she suddenly sees one being stabbed to death. A chain of events is set in motion–and it’s a fun, eight-episode ride that serves as a non-preachy commentary on done-to-death thriller tropes.

4. You

Oh, you. The OG Netflix thriller that paved the way for many try-hard predecessors that never got the show’s innate creepiness just right. The Penn Badgley we knew and loved as Dan Humphrey returns as the quiet and terrifyingly watchful Joe Goldberg, a bookstore manager in New York who finds himself taken with beautiful Guinevere Beck. And soon, finds himself taking over her life–and culling out anyone who gets in the way…

5. Mindhunter

A compelling premise executed perfectly; the psychological crime thriller follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench and psychologist Wendy Carr as they embark on a project to interview convicted serial killers in an attempt to understand their psychology and use the research to solve existing and future cases. The only downside of watching mindhunter, one of the best crime thrillers on netflix is that it stops abruptly after two seasons–but what a two season run it is.

6. High Seas

A Spanish mystery set on the Bárbara de Braganza cruiseliner in the late 1940s, this mystery primarily follows two sisters; Eva and Carolina Villanueva. Mysterious deaths start happening on the ship, and they try to figure out what’s going on–all against the backdrop of a period drama with a beautiful aesthetic and plot that has more twists and turns than the Space Mountain at Disneyland. Ideal if you like your thrillers with a touch of the supernatural.

7. The Sinner

Few formats are as done to death as the American police procedural, but sleeper hit The Sinner manages to turn it on its head–and into TV gold. The anthology series focuses on a new murder or series of murders being handled by Detective Harry Ambrose (played to perfection by Bill Pullman)–focussing on the culprit instead of the victim and delving deep into their mind to get to the ‘why’ of the crime. Gets better with each season.

8. Delhi Crime

You know you’re holding up well from a critical acclaim POV when the episodes of your crime thriller air at the Sundance Film Festival. Based on the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, this thriller can be tough to watch, but the brilliant writing and line-up of exceptional actors (Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain) make it worthwhile. The only one on this list that we’d recommend pacing out instead of bingeing though.

9. Aranyak

Set in the fictional Himachal Pradesh town of Sironah, this Hindi crime thriller stars 90s star Raveena Tandon as one of two by-the-book cops who try to track down the person behind the rape and murder of a teenage girl who had come to the town on holiday. One of the best crime thrillers on Netflix created in Hindi, this one divides the house a bit–considered phenomenal by some and a miss by others, but it scratches the itch of an Indian police procedural if you have one.

10. The Chalet

If you restrict your thriller diet to English Language consumption, you’ll miss out on a lot of absolute gems. One such French diamond in the rough is six parter series The Chalet, which navigates two individual timelines set in Valmoline (a tiny village in the Alps) about twenty years apart. The two narrative lines come together explosively, and you’ll be kept constantly guessing who is behind the murders that pepper both time periods so liberally.
